Christmas Lesson on Giving
December: Christmas Giving Lesson with your Kids
Donating toys to other kids who are in need
If we can teach our kids from a young age to be “others focused”, well then, we’re doin’ something right.
Giving Lesson Activities & Ideas:
Read aloud this book with your kids: Howard B. Wigglebottom and the Power of Giving: a Christmas Story
Activites to do with your kids after reading the book together:
⁃ Encourage your kiddos to wrap lightly used toys they no longer play with, or buy them new, for kids who don’t have as many as them.
⁃ Deliver the gifts to a local Christmas gift drive with you child after wrapping them for them to experience the joy of giving.
Math & Money integration:
⁃ Have your child decide how much to give of their own money to those in need or work around the house for money to buy the present for the gift that we give, opportunity to teach them the 10% tithe & even to teach what 10% is.. percentage teachings (amount of the whole) use pie charts & begin to teach money methods through this.
• ‘Smart Money Smart Kids’ by Rachel Cruze & Dave Ramsey is a great tool for parents to start this practice of earning money & how to manage it, even with younger kids!
Writing & Art Project:
⁃ Before sending the gifts, write or draw a card to include with your present. You can have your child pray for the child and write down what God says about the child you will be gifting too. (If they can’t write yet, ask them what they would like to say & write it for them.)
Bible Lesson:
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, in humility consider others better than yourself.”
-Phil. 2:3-11
Discussion to have with your kids:
“God teaches us to think of others not just ourselves during this time of year, pray for the kids who will receive the gifts & their families, that God would encourage them this time of year & they would learn about Jesus.”
Social Studies:
⁃ Socioeconomic discussion with our kids about different families, their needs, & how we can love & give to those who don’t have as much as us.
There ya go! Hope this is a fun activity for you to do with your kids this season & can maybe even become a family tradition as well! Let me know how it goes for you!
You’ve got this. 🙂 – Lauren
